The Ordinary and Amazing Deborah Sampson
Deborah Sampson managed to turn her ordinary life into an amazing one, both as a young woman and later in life. Deborah Sampson is a heroine. Early in her life, she was abandoned by her father. “After Deborah’s father abandoned his wife and seven children, her mother had no way to support her large family.” Deborah was sent to be a servant on a farm. Hard work gave her a strong back and muscles. Amazingly, she made a men’s suit of clothes for her, cut her hair, and joined the army. To remain undiscovered, she took a musket ball out of her own leg.
Later in life, Deborah Sampson married and raised four children. Her ordinary, poor life forced her to go on a speaking tour, talking about her amazing feats as a Revolutionary Was soldier. She was rewarded for her outstanding service to the country by Massachusetts. “Deborah's friends--including the famous Paul Revere--helped her obtain a military pension for her service to her country.” Deborah Sampson lived an ordinary and amazing life -- a true American heroine.
